A birthday is an occasion when a person or institution celebrates the anniversary of their birth. Birthdays are celebrated in numerous cultures, often with gifts, cards, a party, or a rite of passage.Many religions celebrate the birth of their founders with special holidays (e.g. Christmas, Buddha’s Birthday).

In most English-speaking countries it is traditional to sing the song Happy Birthday to You to the honored person celebrating a birthday.Happy Birthday songs are common worldwide; similar songs exist in other languages. This song is a common greeting used on birthdays, along with greeting cards and verbal greetings with messages such as “I wish you a Happy Birthday” or “Happy Birthday.”

The birthday cake is traditionally highly decorated, and typically covered with lit candles when presented, the number of candles signifying the age of the celebrant.The person whose birthday it is may make a silent wish and then blow out the candles. It is also common for the person celebrating their birthday to cut the initial piece of the cake as a newlywed couple might with a wedding cake. The birthday boy/girl traditionally gets to eat the first piece of  the cake.

Birthday Celebrations

Children wear new clothes on their birthday. A child may rise at daybreak and get dressed in new clothes. The child kneels and touches the feet of their parents as a sign of respect. They then all visit a shrine, where they pray and the child is blessed.In the afternoon there might be a meal that includes a spicy vegetable stew called curry and chutney which is a spicy fruit relish. The dessert is a treat known as dudh pakh, which is a rice like pudding. They might also stir in pastachios, almonds, raisins, and a spice called cardamom.To receive a birthday present wrapped in black and white is considered bad luck.At school the birthday child wears a colored dress and passes out chocolates to the entire class, with the help of a trusted friend.

In Western cultures, particularly in the United States and Australia, birthday parties are often accompanied by colorful decorations, such as balloons and streamers.A birthday cake is often served with candles that are to be blown out after a “birthday wish” has been made. While the birthday cake is being brought to the table,
the song Happy Birthday to You is sung by the guests. A practice most common among wealthy people and celebrities, but engaged in by many others as well, is to hirean event management agency or a party service to organize a birthday party.A child’s birthday party may be held at his/her home or in a public place. Soft drinks are often had alongside water and both sweet and savory foods are typically served to the guests. In many cultures, a birthday cake is served. Birthday parties for children often feature entertainment, costumes, party games,
and a theme. Adults’ birthday parties in Western countries are often held in bars or nightclubs. Though some are held at a restaurant or even at home. A birthday party usually includes gifts for the person whose birthday it is. Most people who come to the birthday party are the ones who have the gifts.

Going on Holidays

Youths also like to go out on trips near sea shores and mountain regions to celebrate their birthdays. Trekking, river rafting, sky diving are the adventurous sports popular among them. Also people visit the places like Goa and enjoy the beaches, sunset and beautiful scenic views there. Modes of enjoyment and fun may differ but the enthusiasm is always at its heights. Camping is also a very thrilling experience for people. Celebrating birthdays in this way also gives people a break from their monotonous lives and brush up them to return to their work with fresh minds and new hopes.

Charity at Holy places

Some people do not like partying, loud music. They rather prefer to celebrate their birthday in a peaceful way. In spite of taking presents from others they like giving gifts to the needy people. This also connects them to God and spirituality as well. People go to temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras according to the religion they follow and offer prayers for their lovely present and bright future. They then distribute food, blankets, clothes and other stuffs to the poor people who cannot fulfill even their basic needs. This way of celebration by sharing what people have by God’s grace to those who are less fortunate gives them peace of mind and a kind of soothing pleasure.
